Wow, de tijd vliegt! In 2018 vierden we met Boom Chicago ons 25-jarig jubileum op grootse wijze in het Koninklijk Theater Carré met twee fantastische shows. Seth Meyers trapte het jubileumprogramma af. Hij heeft nog altijd een speciale band met de stad waar hij heeft gewoond en die hij zo vaak bezocht, dat hij de tel kwijt is geraakt. Seth, als schrijver bekroond met een Emmy Award, is de ster van zijn eigen show Late Night met Seth Meyers. Hij werd in 2014 door Time Magazine uitgeroepen tot een van de 100 meest invloedrijke personen. Seth was ook de comedian bij het White House Correspondents Dinner, waar hij vernietigende grappen maakte over Donald Trump. Sommigen zeggen dat Trump zich daardoor verkiesbaar stelde en president werd. Seth is ons daar allemaal een excuus voor verschuldigd. Seth begon bij Boom Chicago waar hij jarenlang optrad en veel van de sketches schreef. Hij werd verliefd op het Nederlandse voetbal en is nog altijd een fervent fan van Oranje. De tweede show die avond werd een waar comedy spektakel. In de Boom Chicago & Friends-show stond de huidige cast van Boom Chicago op het podium met oud-Boom spelers waaronder Seth, zijn broertje Josh Meyers en Ike Barinholtz (Blockers, The Oath, Mindy Project, Neighbours) en Nederlandse comedyvrienden zoals Ruben van der Meer, Arjen Lubach, Jelke van Houten en Tijl Beckand. 25 jaar geleden introduceerde Boom Chicago improvisatie comedy aan het Nederlands publiek. Sindsdien heeft het succesvolle comedy-ensemble miljoenen mensen aan het lachen gemaakt met producties in hun theater en daarbuiten, terwijl ze blijven vernieuwen zowel op hun eigen podium als daarbuiten. Voor ons 25-jarig jubileum hebben we een heel grappig boek geschreven! The 25 Most Important Years in Dutch history is onze kijk op het leven in Nederland in de afgelopen kwart eeuw. Het is voor fans van comedy, fans van Amsterdam en voor Nederlanders die niet bang zijn om te zien wat mensen echt van hen denken. It’s Funny How It All Started…
Twenty five years ago, Americans Pep Rosenfeld and Andrew Moskos graduated from university and were traveling in Europe. They immediately fell in love with Amsterdam and had what they claim is “the best stoner idea ever”: quit their jobs in the U.S. and move permanently to Amsterdam to start a comedy show.
They wrote the Amsterdam Board of Tourism for some advice, and the VVV wrote back very quickly: “Your idea will not work.” The letter went on: “Dutch People do not want to see a show in English. Tourists do not want to see a show at all. You will need subsidy to do theater in the Netherlands. You will not get any subsidy.” (They were actually right about that one.) Their final advice? “Think twice about your plans.” But Andrew and Pep were not dissuaded and came anyway. Joined by Saskia Maas, who had been an exchange student in the U.S. and connected with them there, they started at the small theater Iboya, just around the corner from the Leidseplein.
Boom Chicago introduced improvisation theater to the Netherlands and has grown into the influential and innovative international theater company it is today.
